Every Anime Momma review is broken into four easy sections so busy parents can quickly decide if an anime is a good fit for their family. Youâll get a quick at-a-glance overview, clear star ratings for common content concerns, detailed explanations behind those ratings, and specific notes on sensitive topics.
My goal is simple: No surprisesâjust clear, calm information to help families understand anime and make confident viewing decisions.

Section 1: [Anime Title] at a Glance
This section is designed to give you a quick snapshot so you can decide right away whether an anime might be worth a closer look.
Youâll find:
- Anime Title
- Brief Summary (usually sourced from MyAnimeList)
- Genres & Themesš
- MyAnimeList Rating (G, PG, PG-13, R²)
- Anime Momma Rating (G, PG, PG-13, R)
If you want to understand why I gave that answer, Sections 2 and 3 will walk you through my reasoning in more detail.
Section 2: The Star Levels
Here, I rate specific content areas using a five-star scale:
- âď¸ = very little present
- âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ = a lot present
These ratings are meant to help you quickly gauge how prominent certain elements are before deciding whether the anime is a good fit for your family.
Star ratings include:
- Action/Violence Level
- Addiction Level
- Blood/Gore Level
- Inappropriate Themes or Conduct
- Alternative Lifestyle Themes
- Level of Magical Elements
- Level of Romance
Section 3: The Star LevelsâExplained
This is where I slow things down and explain why each category received its rating. Hereâs what Iâm looking at:
Action/Violence Level
Sword fights? Gun battles? Hand-to-hand combat?
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Addiction Level
How quickly did I, as an adult, get pulled into the storyâand how likely is it that a child would want to keep watching episode after episode?
Blood/Gore Level
If blood or gore appears, how frequent or intense is it?
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Inappropriate Themes or Conduct
This includes cursing, sexualized imagery, large age gaps, spicy romance, and similar concerns. Itâs worth noting that profanity in Japanese media often differs from U.S. normsâchildren in anime may use words like âshitâ or âdamn,â which I factor into my ratings.
Youâll also see that many anime include brief panty shots or exaggerated focus on charactersâ bodies. Sometimes these moments are fleeting; other times they are more explicit. I do my best to clearly describe the frequency and tone.
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Alternative Lifestyle Themes
Alternative lifestyle representation is common in animeâsometimes central to the story, sometimes mentioned in passing, and sometimes implied through characters. Whether this is something youâre comfortable with is entirely up to you; my role is simply to make you aware of it.
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Level of Magical Elements
Is magic a background element you could almost forget about, or is it central to the storyâs world-building, rules, and mythology?
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Level of Romance
Think hugs, hand-holding, kisses, and other sweet, romantic moments. Age-appropriate and non-age-appropriate romance will be distinguished, as well.
Scenes I found notable will appear in this section as a heads up for parents and guardians.
Section 4: Specific Notes for Parents & Guardians
This final section highlights anything I feel parents and guardians should be especially aware of, such as:
- Suicide or self-harm
- Secrecy or deception
- Murder or extreme violence
- Mentions of other gods or religions
- Eating disorders
- Other sensitive or recurring themes
If something stands out as importantâeven if it doesnât fit neatly into a star categoryâyouâll find it here.

A Few Helpful Notes
For readers new to anime: some genres and terms are unique to anime culture. When needed, Iâll include footnotes explaining them. For example, Shoujo anime often features magical girls, transformations, talking animals, and young protagonists navigating serious dangers and secrets.š
I also reference MyAnimeList ratings for transparency. Most of the time, my overall rating aligns with theirsâbut not always. I do not review X-rated anime beyond noting that it is X-rated and not recommended.²
Disclaimer
- These reviews are not meant to offend anyone who loves an anime or sees it differently than I do.
- They are also not foolproof. No review system is perfect, and small details can occasionally slip through.
My hope is that, together, we can make anime research clearer, calmer, and more helpful for families.
Iâm so glad youâre hereâand I look forward to walking alongside you as you explore anime with confidence. đ
