Anime Genres: A Super-Easy to Understand Breakdown

Understanding Anime Genres

If you’re new to anime, one of the most helpful things to understand is genres. Just like with books, movies, and TV shows, anime is divided into different categories based on the type of story being told.

Knowing the basics of anime genres can help parents and guardians quickly decide whether a show might be a good fit for their family.

What Are Anime Genres?

Genres are simply categories that describe the style, themes, and tone of a show. For example, you’re probably already familiar with genres like comedy, action, or romance in regular television.

Anime works the same way—but often with a wider variety of storytelling styles.

It’s important to remember:  A genre does not automatically mean a show is kid-friendly.  Each series still needs to be reviewed individually.

Something to keep in mind: There are many more kinds of genres of anime, just the same as regular television shows. The ones shared above are simply the most common.

Note: Ecchi will not be found on the Anime Momma Blog other than to let parents know an anime is considered within the demographic and that viewership is strongly discouraged.

A Quick Note on Demographics

In addition to genres, anime is sometimes grouped by target audience age and gender. These categories can give helpful context when choosing what to watch.

– Kodomomuke – Specifically created for young children; typically simple, educational, and family-friendly

– Shounen/Shonen – Often aimed at young and/or teen boys, usually action-focused

– Shoujo/Shojo – Often aimed at girls, usually relationship-focused

– Seinen – Intended for adult men

– Josei – Intended for adult women

While these labels can be helpful, they don’t guarantee content level. It’s always best to review each show individually.

Additional Demographic Terms Parents May See

As you explore anime, you may also come across certain terms that describe shows focused on specific types of relationships. These are important for parents to be aware of when choosing what is appropriate for their family.

  • Ecchi – Portrays light, playful sexual themes, innuendos, and extreme levels of fanservice: designed to be erotic or naughty without being explicit
  • Hentai – Characterized by explicit sexual themes, imagery, and pornography
  • Shounen-Ai – Typically portrays emotional relationships between male characters, often with a softer or more romantic tone
  • Shoujo-Ai – Focuses on emotional relationships between female characters, usually in a gentle or romantic way
  • Yaoi – Generally portrays romantic relationships between male characters with more mature themes
  • Yuri – Focuses on romantic relationships between female characters and can range from light to more mature content

Parent note:

These particular categories center on romantic relationships that may not align with every family’s values. Content can also range from very mild to more mature. For families who prefer to avoid these themes, it’s helpful to recognize these terms when reading descriptions, reviews, or tags.

A Silent Voice – Age Recommendation: 15+ (This anime does not have alternative lifestyles, I just thought it went well with the “decipher” theme.)

Understanding genres makes it easier to:

– Avoid shows with unwanted content

– Choose anime that aligns with your family’s values

For example, if your family enjoys uplifting and positive messages, sports or slice-of-life anime can be a great place to start.

Haikyuu!! – Age Recommendation: Kid-Friendly/Family
