Sentenced to be a Hero (S1; 12 Episodes) – Anime Review

I watched this anime in English dub.

TL;DR: Sentenced to be a Hero is a dark, action-heavy fantasy with strong themes of corruption, sacrifice, and survival that is best suited for older teens or those who enjoy heavy moral dilemmas.

Section 1: Sentenced to be a Hero (S1; 12 Episodes) — At a Glance

Anime Summary | Taken directly from MyAnimeList

In a world where the title of Hero is treated as a punishment rather than an honor, the worst criminals are sentenced to the front lines of an endless war against the Demon Lords. Branded as Heroes, they are forced into military service without even the mercy of death, condemned to be revived and sent back into battle forever.

Among them is Xylo Forbartz, once a respected commander of the Holy Knights. Now the leader of Penal Hero Unit 9004, he commands a squad of convicts considered expendable by the very nation they serve. During one chaotic mission, he encounters Teoritta, a living weapon known as a Goddess, whose presence threatens to shift the balance of both the war and his own fate.

As the unit is sent on increasingly dangerous operations, Xylo must balance leading his unit, surviving the battles he finds himself in, and uncovering the truth behind his own sentencing.

Section 3: Star Levels — Explained

Action/Violence Level

Sentenced to be a Hero jumps straight into action with an extremely fascinating concept and premise— and it really doesn’t slow down. The entire story centers around “Heroes,” who are actually criminals forced into dangerous missions for the Holy Empire. These missions involve:

  • Battling monstrous “faeries”
  • Supporting military squads
  • Facing powerful beings known as Demon Lords

Xylo fights alongside his team and a “goddess” named Teoritta… though we later learn these “goddesses” are actually man-made weapons.

👉 Important Note: The “Demon Lords” here are fantasy creatures—not tied to real-world spiritual meanings. Still, some of their deceptive nature could open the door to conversations about how not everything is as it seems.

Addiction Level

This one took me a little bit to settle into. It opens very fast and very intense, and at first it can feel confusing:

What is a Hero? Who is the “they” that supposedly watches over these Heroes? What are Faeries? Why do Teoritta’s eyes and hair give off embers, and why does she seem to be on fire when her power has nothing to do with flames? (Alright, that last question isn’t important to the plot.)

But—once you make it through that first (very long!) episode, things begin to click into place.

Blood/Gore Level

There is a lot of blood and gore in this anime, from stains on one’s skin or clothing from wounds to being stabbed through the heart, to beheading.

It’s not the most extreme out there, but it is very present and not something I’d consider light viewing.

Inappropriate, Heavy, or Mature Themes or Conduct

Almost every episode in Sentenced to be a Hero shows something that is heavy. (Inappropriate themes are mostly nonexistent, this series tends to lean more toward heavy themes.)

  • Corruption & Betrayal: The system that creates these “Heroes” is deeply flawed. Many are punished unfairly or used to cover up wrongdoing.
  • Life-or-Death Decisions– Characters are forced into incredibly difficult choices, including:
    • Sacrificing civilians for larger missions
    • Dealing with infected individuals in tragic ways

A few very heavy moments: in particular, one character must choose between execution… or ending their own life in order to become a Hero. In another, we find that the Temple did not see Teoritta’s value and were originally planning to experiment on her instead of waking her.

Alternative Lifestyle Themes

None clearly present in this series.

Level of Magical Elements

This world blends science and magic in a really interesting way! It’s less whimsical magic and more structured, almost scientific power.

  • Weapons are enhanced with “Sacred Seals”
  • Powers feel more engineered than mystical
  • Teoritta’s abilities (summoning swords) are especially unique.

Level of Romance

Very light. There are small tidbits of romance during this series, but only shown by Commander Kivia’s slowly developing crush on/admiration of Xylo.

Section 4: Special Notes for Parents & Guardians

I cannot stress enough that there are heavy themes in this series, much more than I could possibly cover. However, I do believe I’ve covered much of it.

Also: if you like Studio Ghibli movies… between the beautiful scenery, science-meets-magic meet-cute, how no one is who you think they are, paired with light-hearted comedy and intense, jarring plot twists: This anime is definitely for you.

Final Thoughts

This one is not your cozy, curl-up-on-the-couch kind of anime. It’s intense, thoughtful, and at times… pretty heavy.

You’ve got strong action and high stakes, deep moral questions and ambiguity, and  characters forced into incredibly hard situations– And while there are moments of humor and beautiful animation sprinkled in, the overall tone leans serious.

This is a story that asks big questions—about justice, truth, and sacrifice. But because of that, it’s not something I’d recommend for younger viewers.

I’d definitely say this is best for viewers who enjoy deeper, thought-provoking stories!

👉 Anime Momma Verdict: Powerful and engaging, but heavy—definitely one to approach with discernment.
