Ascendance of a Bookworm (S1; 14 Episodes)

I watched this anime with English subtitles.

TL;DR: A gentle, heartfelt anime about a book-loving girl rebuilding her passion after being reincarnated in a new world. Minimal violence, no romance, and strong family themes make this a cozy, meaningful watch—especially for those who appreciate slower storytelling.

Section 1: Ascendance of a Bookworm (S1; 14 Episodes) — At a Glance

Anime Summary | Taken directly from MyAnimeList

Urano Motosu loves books and has an endless desire to read literature, no matter the subject. She almost fulfills her dream job of becoming a librarian before her life is ended in an accident. As she draws her last breath, she wishes to be able to read more books in her next life.

As if fate was listening to her prayer, she wakes up reincarnated as Myne (read as “Main” by Crunchyroll subtitles)—a frail five-year-old girl living in a medieval era. What immediately comes to her mind is her passion. She tries to find something to read, only to become frustrated by the lack of books at her disposal.

Without the printing press, books have to be written and copied by hand, making them very expensive; as such, only a few nobles can afford them—but this won’t stop Myne. She will prove that her will to read is unbreakable, and if there are no books around, she will make them herself!

Section 3: Star Levels — Explained

Action/Violence Level

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a very low-action series, making it a gentle watch for most viewers. There are no intense battle scenes or graphic violence. The few moments of tension are rooted more in Myne’s physical struggles and the harsh realities of her new world rather than external conflict.

However, Myne’s father is a town guard and is occasionally seen standing at the gate with his weapon (a spear).

In the finale, Myne’s father defends both her and her mother from nobles. He fights off several men attempting to detain him before Myne steps in and unleashes her stored mana.

Addiction Level

I was pleasantly surprised by this anime. While I didn’t find it immediately addictive, it definitely grew on me. Around episode 10, I found myself wanting to watch more and more as the story began to pick up.

Blood/Gore Level

There is no blood or gore in this anime.

Inappropriate, Heavy, or Mature Themes or Conduct

Myne is a reincarnated character, meaning she retains memories from her past life. Because of this, she must navigate relationships carefully and does, at times, hide the full truth about who she is. Unlike other Isekai anime where characters are reincarnated as infants, Myne was reincarnated into the body of a five-year-old, who passed away of a Mana-related illness called “the Devouring.”

  • Myne frequently pushes herself beyond her physical limits. Her body is very frail, even though her mind is strong, which often results in her collapsing with fevers.

  • Because Myne has been reincarnated from our world, she carries knowledge of things that don’t exist in her new one (like shampoo and simple hair accessories). Using that knowledge, she begins creating these items and eventually becomes involved with the Merchant’s Guild alongside Lutz and Mr. Benno.
    • It is briefly mentioned that others may try to take advantage of her ideas or claim them without giving proper credit. Thankfully, Myne does a fairly good job of learning to navigate this and protect her work.

There are occasional scenes of adult characters drinking.

The series also highlights the difference between social classes. Nobles live very lavish lifestyles, while commoners live modestly and must carefully manage their resources.

A side character, Freida, shares that she is expected to become a concubine to a noble after her baptism (a coming-of-age ceremony at age 7). This arrangement is tied to her survival, as she shares Myne’s illness—the Devouring—and requires access to expensive magical tools that only nobles can provide.

Alternative Lifestyle Themes

There are no explicit alternative lifestyle themes in this series.

One element some viewers may want to be aware of is Myne’s reincarnation. While she has memories from an adult life, her behavior and emotional development align with her current age. Her friendship with Lutz remains innocent and age-appropriate throughout the season.

  • (Some viewers may interpret this dynamic differently, but it is not presented in a concerning way within the story.)

Level of Magical Elements

Magical elements are present in the form of items used to manage the Devouring, an illness caused by excess mana within the body.

Because of her high mana levels, Myne occasionally experiences “Crushings,” where her emotions trigger an intense magical release that can overwhelm–and injure– others around her.

Level of Romance

Romance is not the focus of this series. However, viewers do see:

  • The loving relationship between Myne’s parents
  • Lutz’s sweet and innocent crush on Myne

While Myne forms a close bond with Lutz, it’s important to note:

  • She does not pursue romance
  • Her behavior reflects her current age
  • Their relationship remains wholesome and age-appropriate

Lutz is incredibly supportive of Myne, even after learning the truth about her. He often helps bring her ideas to life and shows a strong sense of loyalty and care.

Section 4: Special Notes for Parents & Guardians

At its core, Ascendance of a Bookworm is about passion, perseverance, and purpose. Myne’s determination to bring books into a world that lacks them is both inspiring and emotional.

What really stands out is how grounded the story feels. Even in a fantasy setting, the challenges—poverty, illness, and limitations—feel very real.

The series includes a structured religion within its world, with temples, priests, and rituals playing a role in the culture. These elements are not heavily emphasized but are present. For families of faith, this could be a natural opportunity for discussion about the difference between fictional belief systems and personal beliefs.

Another thing—and, as a mom, this is one of my favorite parts—Myne’s parents are present, loving, and actively involved in her life. That alone makes this series stand out in a genre where parents are often sidelined or absent altogether.

Final Thoughts

This is a slow-”burn” story—but in the best way. Instead of rushing into action, it carefully builds its world, characters, and stakes. The joy comes from watching small victories: making paper, negotiating for resources, and finding ways to pursue something as simple—and powerful—as reading.

It’s also incredibly cozy. If you’re looking for something fast-paced and action-heavy, this isn’t it. But if you’re wanting something meaningful, comforting, and quietly inspiring, this one truly delivers.

Ascendance of a Bookworm doesn’t rely on flashy moments to keep your attention—it simply tells a good story, and tells it well.

It’s thoughtful. It’s wholesome. And it reminds us that even small dreams can have a big impact.

If your home leans toward content that is calm, character-driven, and rooted in perseverance and family, this is an easy recommendation.

Stay tuned for my review of Season 2.
