Great Anime Dads (and Father Figures) Worth Celebrating

Great Anime Dads (and Father Figures) Worth Celebrating

Hi all, it’s Tam, The Anime Momma!

Father’s Day seemed like the perfect time to celebrate some of anime’s best dads and father figures.

Let’s be honest: anime doesn’t always have the best track record when it comes to parents. Between missing parents, mysterious parents, and parents who somehow disappear for entire story arcs, good parenting can sometimes feel surprisingly rare.

But every now and then, anime gives us a father figure who reminds us what great parenting looks like.

Some of these characters are biological fathers. Some are adoptive parents. Some are mentors, teachers, or caregivers who step into a parental role when children need them most.

Whatever their title, they all have one thing in common: they show up big time.

Here are a few anime dads and father figures that I think are worth celebrating. Check them out below.

Father Orsi (Black Clover)

Father Orsi runs the church and orphanage in Hage Village, where Asta, Yuno, and several other children grow up.

He isn’t rich. He isn’t powerful. Most days he’s simply trying to keep the lights on, feed a house full of children, and survive whatever chaos Asta creates next.

Why He’s Great

What I love most about Father Orsi is how realistic his parenting feels.

He gets frustrated. He worries. He questions some of the children’s decisions. Yet through it all, he remains a constant source of stability and care.

He provides a safe home for children who have nowhere else to go and encourages them to pursue futures bigger than their circumstances.

One of my favorite things about Father Orsi is that he never tells Asta or Yuno to lower their expectations simply because they are poor orphans from a tiny village. Instead, he encourages them to work hard and become the best versions of themselves.

Anime Momma Take

Father Orsi reminds me that great parenting isn’t about being perfect. It’s about consistently showing up for the children who depend on you.

Byakuya Ishigami (Dr. Stone)

Byakuya may not be Senku’s biological father, but he is one of the most supportive parents I’ve seen in anime.

From a young age, Senku is different. He’s fascinated by science, endlessly curious, and interested in things most children his age aren’t.

Byakuya never tries to change that.

Why He’s Great

Byakuya embraces who Senku already is.

He doesn’t try to force him into a mold. He doesn’t pressure him to fit in. Instead, he encourages his interests and celebrates what makes him unique.

Even when he doesn’t fully understand Senku’s experiments, he listens. Even when others might find Senku unusual, he believes in him.

That kind of support can change a child’s life.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the freedom to be themselves. Byakuya models that beautifully.

Loid Forger (Spy x Family)

Loid Forger begins his journey pretending to be a father for the sake of a mission.

The funny thing is that somewhere along the way, he becomes one.

As his relationship with Anya grows, what started as an assignment slowly becomes a family.

Why He’s Great

Loid isn’t perfect.

He overthinks things. He sometimes places too much pressure on Anya. He makes mistakes.

But he keeps trying.

He attends school events. He worries about her future. He adjusts his expectations when he realizes she’s struggling. He genuinely wants her to succeed.

Many parents can probably relate to the feeling of learning as they go.

Anime Momma Take

Good parenting isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about loving your child enough to keep trying.

Kazuki Kurusu & Rei Suwa (Buddy Daddies)

Technically, these two aren’t dads.

At least not at first.

When they unexpectedly find themselves caring for a little girl named Miri, their lives are turned upside down. Neither one is prepared for parenting, but both gradually learn what it means to put a child first.

Why They’re Great

One of the things I love about Buddy Daddies is that neither Kazuki nor Rei is a perfect parent on his own.

Kazuki is often the more nurturing and outwardly affectionate of the two. He’s trying to manage meals, schedules, school events, and the countless details that come with raising a child.

Rei’s growth is different. At the beginning of the series, he struggles to connect with others and has little experience expressing care. Over time, Miri helps him discover a side of himself he never knew existed.

Together, they create exactly the home Miri needs.

Anime Momma Take

Parenting is often a team effort. Kazuki and Rei remind us that no parent has every strength, but love, commitment, and a willingness to learn go a long way.

Gagumber (Sakugan)

Gagumber and his daughter Memenpu spend much of Sakugan exploring dangerous places, arguing, and driving each other absolutely crazy.

In other words, they’re a fairly realistic parent-child duo.

Why He’s Great

Gagumber is protective. Sometimes overly protective.

He worries constantly about Memenpu’s safety and often struggles to accept that she’s growing up and capable of making her own decisions.

But beneath all the arguments is a father who loves his daughter deeply.

One of Sakugan’s central themes is finding the balance between protecting children and allowing them to become independent. Gagumber struggles with that balance throughout the series, which makes him feel very human.

Anime Momma Take

I think a lot of parents can relate to Gagumber. We want to keep our children safe, but we also want them to become confident, independent people. That’s not always easy.

Reinhart Jamil (By the Grace of the Gods)

While Reinhart is best known as Eliaria’s father, one of the things I appreciate most about him is the way he also supports Ryoma.

From the moment they meet, Reinhart becomes a trusted adult figure in Ryoma’s life.

Why He’s Great

Reinhart combines kindness, wisdom, and genuine care.

He encourages his daughter’s growth while also helping Ryoma navigate a world that often feels overwhelming. He opens doors, provides opportunities, and offers guidance without trying to control every outcome.

Most importantly, he wants the children in his life to thrive.

Anime Momma Take

Every child benefits from having caring adults who believe in them in their corner. Reinhart reminds us just how undeniably powerful that support can be.

Shota Aizawa (My Hero Academia)

Aizawa isn’t a father, but he absolutely deserves recognition as one of anime’s best mentor figures.

As the homeroom teacher for Class 1-A, he takes responsibility for helping his students grow into capable heroes and responsible young adults.

Why He’s Great

At first glance, Aizawa can seem strict, distant, and intimidating.

But underneath that tired exterior is someone who cares deeply about his students.

He pushes them because he believes they can do better. He protects them when they’re in danger. He takes their dreams seriously and helps them develop the skills they need to succeed.

Aizawa understands that caring for children isn’t always about being warm and cheerful. Sometimes it’s about setting high expectations while providing the support needed to meet them.

Anime Momma Take

As a former teacher myself, I have a soft spot for educators like Aizawa. The students may not always realize it, but some of the strictest teachers are often the ones who care the most.

Honorable Mention: Anime’s Favorite “Dad Friend”: Daichi Sawamura (Haikyuu!!)

No list celebrating anime dads and father figures would feel complete without mentioning the fandom’s unofficial dad.

Daichi isn’t actually a father. He’s the captain of Karasuno’s volleyball team.

But if you’ve spent any time around Haikyuu fans, you’ve probably heard him called “Dadchi.”

Why Fans Love Him

Daichi is dependable, responsible, patient, and endlessly supportive of his teammates.

While everyone else is busy creating chaos, Daichi is usually the one trying to keep things under control.

He’s the steady presence that helps hold the team together.

Anime Momma Take

Every friend group seems to have that one person who somehow becomes the responsible adult. For Karasuno, that’s Daichi—and fans love him for it.

Anime Dads Still on My Watch List 👀

As I was putting together this post, a few names kept appearing whenever anime fans discussed great dads.

I haven’t personally watched these series yet, but based on how often they’re mentioned, I have a feeling they’ll eventually earn a place on a future version of this list.

  • Maes Hughes (Fullmetal Alchemist)
  • Shikaku Nara (Naruto)
  • Belgrieve (My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer)

Final Thoughts

One thing I noticed while writing this list is that many of my favorite anime dads aren’t biological fathers at all.

Some are adoptive parents.

Some are teachers.

Some are mentors.

Some simply chose to step up when a child needed them.

Maybe that’s one of the things anime occasionally gets very right about parenthood.

Being a great parent isn’t about biology.

It’s about showing up.

It’s about providing safety, guidance, encouragement, and love.

It’s about choosing your child every day.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, stepdads, adoptive dads, foster dads, grandpas, mentors, teachers, and father figures who do exactly that.

Another Honorable Mention: Akio Furukawa (Clannad)
