Understanding Anime Genres: A Super-Easy Breakdown
Understanding Anime Genres
If you’re new to anime, one of the most helpful things to understand is genres.
Just like books, movies, and television shows, anime is divided into different categories based on the type of story being told. Understanding the basics of anime genres can help parents and guardians quickly identify what a show might be about and whether it may be a good fit for their family.
One important thing to remember: a genre tells you what kind of story you’re getting—not whether that story is appropriate for your child.
That’s where research, reviews, and discernment come in. (Read “What the Anime Momma Means by Discernment” for more information.)

What Are Anime Genres?
Genres are simply categories that describe the style, themes, and tone of a story.
For example, you’re probably already familiar with genres like:
- Comedy
- Action
- Romance
- Mystery
- Fantasy
Anime works the same way.
A genre helps answer questions like:
- Is this a fast-paced adventure?
- Is this a relaxing slice-of-life story?
- Is this a romance?
- Is this meant to create suspense?
Understanding genres can help parents narrow down what their child might enjoy while avoiding content that may not align with their family’s values or comfort level.
