Anime Ratings Explained

Why The Anime Momma Uses a Different System

One of the most common questions parents ask is:

“Why does this anime have one rating on Netflix, a different rating on Crunchyroll, and yet another recommendation on your review?”

It’s a fair question!

Anime ratings can be confusing, especially for parents who are new to the medium. While official ratings are helpful, they don’t always tell the full story. That’s why The Anime Momma includes its own age recommendations alongside official ratings.

My goal isn’t to replace official ratings—it’s to provide additional context so parents can make informed decisions for their own families.

Understanding Official Ratings

Depending on where you watch anime, you may see ratings such as:

  • TV-Y7
  • TV-PG
  • TV-14
  • TV-MA
  • PG
  • PG-13
  • R

These ratings provide a general guideline based on content and intended audience.

However, ratings alone don’t always tell parents what they’re actually getting.

For example, two shows may both carry a TV-14 rating, yet have very different content.

One might feature occasional cartoon violence and mild language.

Another might contain graphic injuries, intense psychological themes, sexual content, or heavy fan service.

Technically, both may fit within the same rating category—but many parents would view them very differently.

Why Anime Can Be Especially Tricky

Many people assume that animation automatically means something is made for children.

Anime doesn’t work that way.

Anime is simply a storytelling medium, much like movies, books, or television.

Some anime are created specifically for young children.

Others are intended for teenagers.

Many are written primarily for adults.

Because of this, a colorful art style doesn’t necessarily indicate age-appropriate content.

A show that looks cute on the surface may contain themes that are far more mature than parents expect.

Why The Anime Momma Uses Additional Recommendations

Every family is different.

What feels appropriate for one thirteen-year-old may not feel appropriate for another.

Rather than telling parents what they should allow, I aim to provide information that helps them make the best decision for their own children.

When I assign an age recommendation, I consider factors such as:

  • Violence and gore
  • Language
  • Sexual content
  • Fan service
  • Horror elements
  • Mature themes
  • Emotional intensity
  • Overall tone and presentation

My recommendations are based on the complete viewing experience, not just whether a show technically fits within an official rating category.

The Anime Momma Recommendation Scale

Rather than assigning a specific age, I use developmental stages that many parents already think in. These recommendations are intended to be guidelines, not strict rules. Every child is different, and parents should always consider their own child’s maturity level, sensitivities, and viewing history.

Young Children | Approx. Age Range: 5–7+

Appropriate for most young viewers with minimal concerns.

Older Children | Approx. Age Range: 8–10+

Generally suitable for elementary-age children, though some parental guidance may be helpful.

Tweens | Approx. Age Range: 11–12+

May include mild to moderate violence, scary moments, or more complex themes.

Young Teens | Approx. Age Range: 13–15+

May contain moderate to significant violence, strong language or themes, or occasional fan service.

Older Teens | Approx. Age Range: 16–17+

May include significant violence, mature themes, stronger language, or more frequent fan service.

Adults | Approx. Age Range: 18+

Intended primarily for mature audiences due to content, themes, or presentation.

How I Determine My Recommendations

In addition to evaluating the content of an anime, I also draw on my experience as a former teacher and a parent.

During my years in the classroom, I worked with children and teens across multiple age groups and grade levels. Those experiences gave me a firsthand understanding of the differences in maturity, emotional development, interests, and sensitivities that often exist between elementary-age children, tweens, younger teens, and older teens.

When assigning an Anime Momma Recommendation, I don’t simply ask, “What is the official rating?” I also consider questions such as:

  • How would the average child in this age group likely respond to this content?
  • Are the themes likely to be understood and processed appropriately by this age group?
  • Would most parents be comfortable with the violence, language, fan service, or mature themes presented?
  • Does the overall tone feel appropriate for viewers at this stage of development?

My recommendations are not meant to replace parental judgment. Rather, they reflect a combination of content analysis, parenting perspective, and my experience working with children of different ages and developmental stages.

Why My Recommendation May Differ From Official Ratings

Occasionally, my recommendation may be more restrictive than an official rating.

For example, a series may be rated TV-14 but contain:

  • Frequent fan service
  • Graphic violence
  • Disturbing psychological themes
  • Sexual situations
  • Intense horror content

In those cases, I may recommend the series for older teens or adults.

Likewise, there may be times when a show’s official rating sounds intimidating, but the actual content is milder than many parents expect.

My goal is to explain those differences clearly so parents can make informed decisions.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

No rating system is perfect.

Official ratings are helpful.

My recommendations are helpful.

But no one knows your child better than you do.

Every child matures at a different pace, has different sensitivities, and responds differently to various types of content.

That’s why I encourage parents to use ratings as tools—not rules.

Whenever possible, review content yourself, read detailed reviews, and consider your child’s individual maturity level.

The Anime Momma Promise

My goal has never been to tell parents what they should allow.

My goal is to provide honest, transparent information so families can make confident viewing decisions.

Whether you agree with every recommendation or not, you can expect me to explain why I arrived at a particular age recommendation and what content influenced that decision.

Because informed parents make the best decisions for their own families.
